Hollywood Cemetery is a large, sprawling cemetery located at 412 South Cherry Street in Richmond, Virginia, next to the Oregon Hill neighborhood. It is the final resting place of two United States Presidents, James Monroe, and John Tyler, as well as the only Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis. It is characterized by rolling hills and winding paths overlooking the James River. It is also the final resting place of 28 Confederate generals, the most of any cemetery in the country, including George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart.
The land on which Hollywood Cemetery now stands was once part of the estate of William Byrd III. It was later owned by the Harvie family and became known as “Harvie’s Woods.”One of the original founders of Hollywood Cemetery was William H. Haxall. In the spring of 1847, two Richmond residents, Joshua J. Fry and William H. Haxall visited Mount Auburn Cemetery, a beautiful cemetery near Boston.
