The Virginia State Capitol is the seat of state government for the Commonwealth of Virginia, located in Richmond, Virginia’s third capital city. It is home to the Virginia General Assembly, North America’s oldest elected legislative body, which was founded in 1619 as the House of Burgesses. Thomas Jefferson and Charles-Louis Clérisseau designed the Capitol in France, based on the Maison Carrée in Nîmes. The building was started in 1785 and finished in 1788. Due to fires during the Colonial period, the current Capitol is the eighth to be built to serve as Virginia’s statehouse. Two wings were added in the early twentieth century, giving it its current appearance. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.  Maggie L.
