History

Richmond was a 19th-century slave-trafficking hotspot. Shockoe Bottom was America’s biggest slave market. Civil War capital was Richmond. The South burned Richmond as a last resort, so Union troops found it ablaze. 80% of Downtown Richmond was lost. Rebuilding helped Richmond’s economy. Thalhimers, Miller & Rhoads, and Sears all moved to malls in the 1990s. 600 buildings were built while downtown collapsed in the 1960s. The 1980s’ final skyscraper. Minoru Yamasaki founded Richmond Fed. Richmond benefits from Fortune 500 enterprises. Dominion, MeadWestvaco, and Universal are downtown. MeadWestvaco’s 2010 headquarters opened. HUD prioritized impoverished neighborhoods. Developers wanted the loans to build affordable student housing.
